Flavoil attends NEODA AGM

NEODA, the national edible oil distributors Association held their AGM at St. Martin in the fields crypt (poor phone signal folks!) and held an elegant meal at the historic Tallow Chandlers Hall later in the evening. Here is a short summary of the day.
Lecture 1
This was a summary of the previous year’s Fish & Chip Day activity.
The results of the Fish & Chip Day was exceptional with over 521 pieces of news coverage that was professionally valued at over £700,000. This included significant coverage on radio (Chris Evans, Steve Wright) and BBC Breakfast news with Eamon Holmes and considerable (if ironic) coverage in national newspapers.
In truth, this level of coverage is remarkable and reflects the simple fact that Fish & Chips is a national dish, a successful industry and something of interest and value to the general public, who-research shows- eat Fish & Chips at least once or twice a month.
The Fish & Chip day obviously resonated with the public and was a success by any standard.

Lecture 2
There followed a lecture on Fire insurance given by the owner of the Deep Blue chain of fish & chip shops who had suffered 3 fires in 3 months. The insurers failed to pay out on two fires as the loss adjuster had concluded that the fires were the fault of negligence on the part of the staff. This led to him setting up his own insurance for chippies which looked very promising.
Lecture 3
This was a  lecture given  by fire experts Tyco on the causes, prevention and stopping of fires in chip shops. There was a video showing the violence and unstoppable nature of a chip fire and the uselessness of fire blankets.
Martin asked how the fires started if the chip friers had temperature controls – the expert gave the interesting response that the oil tends to be initially heated below the sensor mark (because they put too little oil in in the morning) and so it heats up and past the smoke point and ignites!
Lecture 4
AAK then gave an amusing (but thought provoking) lecture on health scares over the decades culminating in recent scares about Palm Oil and acrylamides.
The lecturer focussed on a ‘learned’ article about the hazards of ‘Vegetable oils’ by an attractive Doctor that was full of false information and half-truths that is all-to-familiar to anyone  researching on the subject of oils which is a very hot topic on the internet.

Lecture 6
This was a lecture given by Seafish which covered in  detail a market research report on Fish & Chips which Martin had studied last year.
The research was very interesting and painted a clear and somewhat surprising picture of the Fish & Chip industry.
Although Fish & Chips is the most successful takeaway food operation in the UK and is clearly enjoyed by over 20 million people. The lecturer proposed that a complete overhaul of this thriving industry take place with recommendations of nutritional information and reduced and nationally standardized portion sizes.
The meeting concluded with a dinner at the beautiful Tallow Chandlers Hall, an ancient livery hall in the City of London.

    FlavOil were excited to be part of the huge IFE Expo in London’s ExCel Centre over 4 days this week. The show is the biggest Food and Drink Event in the UK and is held once every two years.
