FLAVOIL are delighted to announce the launch of our own HOSO High Oleic Sunflower Oil. This revolutionary brand of Sunflower Oil is probably the perfect oil for all kitchen uses as it has an exemplary nutritional profile combined with a high performance across all cooking tasks.
 
What is "high oleic" oil?
High oleic oil is any oil that is high in monounsaturated fats. Sunflower, Olive and Rapeseed oil are all naturally high in monounsaturated fat, but they are also have polyunsaturated fats which mean they are healthy but not very shelf-stable.
 
Over recent years, scientists have developed sunflower oils that are naturally bred to be much higher in monounsaturated fats and low in polyunsaturated fats so they can be used in products that need to be shelf-stable. For example potato crisps and other fried snacks that are bagged and have a long shelf life. Sunflower oil is preferred by processors as it has a neutral flavour that allows the flavour of the ingredients to "sing" without any interference from the oil flavours.
 
Why do food companies use high oleic oil?
In the past, food companies used hydrogenated oils (trans fats) to keep food shelf-stable and preserve flavour. When companies had to stop using trans fats (because they are very unhealthy and build up in the body) , they switched to high oleic oils or even palm kernel oil to make their food last longer for customers. These oils are often used in processed and branded baked goods (cakes, biscuits, etc) and as spray coatings for cereal, crackers and dried fruit also in non-dairy creamers as well as many types of frying.
 
Is it healthy?
Modern medical science says a big yes. It is as healthy as we can currently make it . High oleic Sunflower oil, HOSO, is high in unsaturated fat, low in saturated fat, and has no trans fat. The large amount of monounsaturated fat in HOSO has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) without lowering HDL cholesterol (the good kind). When LDL cholesterol goes down, so do the risks of heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke. This matters because you will only live as long as your heart!
 
Can I use this oil?
In recent years only packaged, processed foods contained these oils, but now HOSO High Oleic Sunflower oil is available to everyone. FlavOil UK is a company that is now marketing this healthy cooking and dipping oil for use in the home and professional kitchen.
